Frequently Asked Questions

Location

While my practice is based in Manhattan, I am currently only seeing clients who live in New York virtually.

First Session

During our first session, I will ask questions to get a better sense of who you are, what brings you to therapy, and how I can best support you. We’ll review what it will be like to work together. This will also be an opportunity for you to get to know me and to determine whether we are the right fit. After this session, if you choose to continue working with me, we will collaborate on goals for therapy.

Length & Frequency of Sessions

I typically meet with clients weekly for 45 minutes.

Once we agree to work together we will select a meeting time. I allocate a weekly session spot that belongs to you, so it is important to pick a time that you can attend on a fairly consistent basis.  I understand that there are certain circumstances that make scheduling difficult. If this is the case, I am happy to discuss your particular situation to determine whether there is a more appropriate scheduling arrangement.

Please note, I do have a 24-hour cancelation policy. Clients will be expected to pay the full payment if a session is cancled less than 24 hours in advance or in the event of a no-show. To avoid cancellation fees, I also offer phone therapy.

The length of treatment varies, depending on the number and types of challenges you wish to address. I have worked with clients from a couple of months to multiple years. I will check in with you throughout the process to make sure we are on the same page regarding your treatment progress.

Insurance

Though I am not an in-network therapist, many clients opt to use their out-of-network benefits, which can reimburse between 60% and 90% of my fee once the deductible is met.

If you choose to utilize these benefits, at the end of each month I will email you paperwork that you can submit online for insurance reimbursement. You will be responsible for full payment at the time of our appointment, and your insurance company will reimburse you directly. Please note I cannot guarantee coverage, so I encourage you to check your benefits before scheduling an appointment.

To help you verify and better understand your coverage, I suggest that you contact the Member Services Department (by calling the number on the back of your insurance card) and ask the following questions:

1) Do I have out-of-network outpatient mental/behavioral health benefits?

2) Is there a limit on how many mental health visits I receive per calendar year?

3) Do I need pre-authorization from my doctor?

4) Do I have a deductible, and how much of the deductible has been met?

5) What is the patient co-insurance per session? (Co-insurance is the percentage of the fee that you will ultimately be responsible for after your deductible is met. Your insurance company will cover the rest.)

6) Is there an out-of-pocket maximum? (This means that after you pay a certain amount out-of-pocket, your insurance company should fully cover the cost of your visits.)

7) What is the best way to submit claims?

Some insurance plans have an “allowable amount,” which is the most the plan will cover for a therapy session. If your plan does not allow the full amount, you would be responsible for what it does not cover. This amount is based on what other therapists typically charge in the area. You can verify this amount (also known was the Usual and Customary Rate) through the Fair Health Consumer’s website. 1) Enter zip: 10016, 2) Enter procedural code: 90834, 3) scroll to  “out-of-network reimbursement.” Since my rate is below NYC industry standards, your insurance should allow the full amount.
